I don't think that would work either.  I looked at the controls in
question with UI Element Inspector, and the hierarchy contains a
couple of 'unknown' elements:

<AXApplication: "Finder">
 <AXWindow: "2-22-05">
  <AXUnknown>
   <AXUnknown>
    <AXPopUpButton>

Anyone know where these peferences are stored?  .DS_Store perhaps?
