Thanks everyone for your help. This is so cool, working with such
interesting people...

I suppose it's a UNIX executable. You have to call it from Terminal,
or with "do shell script".

Copying reduces all multiple spaces to a single space.
Thanks, Steven. That's important to know, because it makes makes
chasing an alternative potential solution worthwhile.

why are you doing it in the Terminal?

After installing the xpdf-tools package, the command-line tool
pdftotext can be found in the /sw/bin/ directory. (At least that is
where it installed by default on my machine.)
I'm not sure it went into the same place on mine, but then I haven't
found the /sw/bin directory on my machine yet.
Here's what I tried:
1. I tried running your suggested script, and got an error on the
"do shell script" line:
"sh: line 1: /sw/bin/pdftotext: No such file or directory"
2. I searched for both pdftotest and xpdf using the following technique:
In a Finder window, I clicked on the topmost (computer) icon in the
left pane, then typed my search string into the Q-selection area on
the right side of the window's top sash. I then typed Enter.
[The reason I mention my technique is that I have tried another,
starting with command-F in the Finder, that seems totally worthless.
Sometimes I think it couldn't find honey in a beehive.]
For pdftotext, nothing appeared, even after the spinning bearded
circle near the bottom right of the window disappeared.
For xpdf, I got four hits. Three were expected: the downloaded file
name, the pseudodisk name, and the xpdf-tools.pkg inside the
pseudodisk.
A fourth hit has the same icon as the xpdf-tools.pkg file inside
the pseudodisk, except that it is only 84KB in size and was both
created and modified today, at about the time I installed xpdf.
It is at TopDisk->Library->Receipts->xpdf-tools.pkg
3. I searched for "sw" (using the above technique) and got zillions of hits,
but no folder with the explicit name "sw".
I am using MacOS 10.3.7. I bought the O'Reilly book on Panther, but
I haven't finished reading it yet.
