I think his desire is to replace problematic characters in file names
that are allowable by Finder. For instance, we have a web upload page
where I work that the web programers implemented a policy that file
names can only be letters, numbers and underscores. Any files that do
have these characters will not be uploaded, but generate an error. With
a script, such as the one Jan is trying to write, would allow for batch
normalization of file names for such a system.

There are no forbidden characters in filenames. What problem are you
trying to solve?
