Jan,

I would just do this...its a simple one-liner.

set testDir to "/Users/jpietry/Desktop/testDir"
set testZIP to "/Users/jpietry/Desktop/testDir.zip"

do shell script "/usr/bin/ditto -c -k -rsrc --keepParent " & testDir & " " &
testZIP

BE SURE TO KEEP AS 1-LINE.

Works like a charm. You don't need to use the GUI, and call the Terminal and
BOMArchiveHelper.
