To avoid the app showing up i use "Drop Script Backgrounder", works like a charm and makes your apple-scripts runs like demons instead of interface-less applications...

Oh, I never thought to look under "alarm." BTW, there is also a "run script" alarm; wouldn't that be better than "Open file"?
Yes, I guess so. That would avoid having an applet ounce in the dock, etc. They're not scriptable, though, if that matters.
