I'm assuming file thefile would be a colon delimited hfs file path, right?

I don't think so, provide an alias: script of file alias "path:to:compiled:script:file"


I would, of course, rather find a simple change to perform on my original
command instead of having to construct a new method. Maybe a new data type
that means text although it's not described by the 4 character code "TEXT"?

On the other hand, Smile's script manipulation features may be richer than the shell's.
