This has been very helpful. I think there's a misunderstanding somewhere,
though, since the script as I originally presented it doesn't work for me on
10.3.8 either. Thanks to all who contributed.

So I take it there is a general feeling that it is not the case that
something has gone sour with soap support? Because I got the idea (using
google) that some people thought it had. As if soap had progressed but soap
support on Mac OS X had not and was still using some outmoded version of the
protocol, or something...? m.
