I have a vague recollection that Chris Nebel stated that they had done
something to the system Script menu in either Panther or Tiger that removed
the impedance you otherwise get running scripts from the outside, and that
they wouldn't be slower than run from an app's script menu. But my
recollection is vague - I don't know for certain that 1) Chris said just
that, and 2) it's true in all regards.
I just tried a simple script that asks Entourage for its name. Repeating 500
times takes about 9 seconds from the system script menu; repeating 10000
times from the app's script menu takes about 2 seconds. That's a very
artificial test, but it shows there's a big potential gap.
Putting aside for a second the issue of Mail's script menu that no
longer exists, I want to make sure I understand what exactly is
supposed to be more efficient if run from within an application's
script menu. Operations of the application that "owns" the script
menu are clearly faster. However, I suspect that there is no
difference in other operations such as System events, Finder, osaxen,
or with "tell" blocks for other applications. I also wonder whether
the difference in speed is evident only with regular scripts, or is
it also present with scripts compiled as applications. Did the
authors of Mail figure out how to eliminate the "impedance" of a
script in the generic script menu? Is that why the menu no longer
exists? Finally, are there any scripting techniques for eliminating
the impedance in the generic script menu (other than getting 3rd
party software)?
