Okay, I see what the problem is. In the current Script Editor, make a new
script and give it a description (it doesn't matter what). Save it. Open it
in Script Editor 1.8.3 (Classic). Ka-boom!

So, it's the presence of the description that was causing this. Seems like a
bug to me, but of course since Script Editor these days seems hardly to give
a tinker's cuss about such minor issues as backwards compatibility, it
probably doesn't agree. m.
