It seems that my iBook G3 running Tiger periodically forgets the AirPort network it is attached to (and also every time the machine goes to sleep),

If the network you wish to use is the default (system prefs:network pane:"By default join"), then doesn't it just reconnect on demand (like when your mail program checks the mail, the network reups automatically?)
