Just to put a bow on this topic... I wanted to tell everybody who has
tried to help me synchronize my source trees using AppleScript that I
now have a solution that seems to be working well. What I ended up
doing is using rsync for the actual synchronization process. But I'm
using Automator to mount the remote file system, invoke the rsync
shell command and just generally put a face on the service. Rsync is
obviously the right tool for the job. Perhaps it was unrealistic of
me to assume that just because the Finder knows about files that it's
the right tool to use in sync'ing trees of file selectively.
Not to editorialize beyond my range... but I'm left with a strong
sense of deja vu when I think of Apple's recent promotion of
Automator to end consumers without cleaning up (or at least
abstracting away) long standing usability issues in AppleScript. This
may well be the fourth or fifth time since System 7 was released that
I tried to do something useful with AppleEvents. Each time a walk
away from the experience feeling hoodwinked by Apple. (Why does
FileMaker also come to mind in this respect?)
Hats off to those that stick around long enough to figure out how to
coerce the technology into something useful.
