Heh. While Mr Nebel makes it all sound so easy, as a well hardened and fearsomely experienced old pro he might not be able to completely relate to the hapless newbie cast adrift for the very first time in this vast ocean of alien information, thoroughly overwhelmed and hopelessly lost with not a clue how or where to start sorting it out. It's not a very nice experience.
As mentioned elsewhere, the AS language documentation really ought to be embedded in the very first place Joe Newbie will look: as an 'AppleScript Language Help' option in the Script Editor's 'Help' menu. Not that the ASLG is anything like the gentle, patient and forgiving introduction that complete newbies really need, but at least it's better than nothing.
(FWIW, I've been humming and hawwing over producing a AppleScript editor that'd address exactly these sorts of issues; I'm just not convinced that the market would be big or enthusiastic enough to justify it.)

Indeed. As they say: first impressions count. Given how little the language has evolved, it's disappointing Apple don't see fit to devote even the trivial amount of resources it'd take just to keep it up with the current release.

Urgh. The 'Essential Sub-routines' section is unmitigated crap that shouldn't be inflicted upon anybody. Inaccessibility is a good start if you ask me.
