Perhaps you already discounted this approach, but just in case...
Terminal.app has the ability to save a window, or a complete set of
windows, to a file. This file can be opened at a later time and all
settings will be restored.
If you save a single window you can also specify a command to run when
the *.term file is reopened. If you save a set of windows, I don't
think that's an option, BUT you would at least have a predictable set
of windows at which you could direct subsequent AS directives.
Apologies for not directly addressing you questions, but I thought
maybe this would be an easier route.
