set f's creator type to (path to a)'s creator type

Only if the application has a creator type.

tell current application
        choose file
                alias "Dora:Applications:iMovie.app:"
end tell
tell application "Finder"
get creator type of alias "Dora:Applications:iMovie.app:"
                missing value
end tell

Good general point Michelle - although, in that particular case, the missing info now appears to be in place. I have a creator type for iMovie (4.0.1) of "Hway".
