I would like to point out that while Apple has made packages behave
like files in a general sense, they still saw the necessity to add a
"Show Package Contents" item to the contextual menu for such items.
Clearly, there are many, many reasons to want to "peek into" a package,
whether it be an mbox or one of countless others.
Personally, I have a "Show Package Contents" script which I've attached
to a keyboard shortcut in the Finder. It's handy to be able to
cmd-option-o a selected file and peek inside. Unfortunately, due to
all the limitations already discussed, I can only use this script on
Applications or other packages with a "Contents" folder inside. I
would love to have the script work on .xcode bundles.
I did think the suggestion of making a folder with aliases to the
package contents was interesting. I might pursue that.

Can you explain your need to actually open the mbox in the Finder?
Packages are constructed to behave like aliases to the executable file
(or
data file) that is buried inside.
