No, I'm not complaining. I asked if there were a better way. No one
has said why text manipulation is better.
There's not much wrong with any of the methods suggested, Michelle.
I mentioned earlier that I opted for my original approach for
considerations of speed. (As it happens, my script was about 5 times
faster than yours.) While performance may not necessarily be an issue
with individual files, it could become significant when dealing with a
number of items.
I believe Malcolm also explained that his suggestion was based around
an attempt to get closer to a single line of code - an equally
absorbing challenge.
Given that a script actually achieves the desired result, speed,
brevity and readability are all valid additional aims (if sometimes
mutually exclusive). Since you allowed us the luxury of defining
"better", the responses were naturally diverse in their aims.
