Jake, of course I can't solve your issue but in case it helps in some way I once met a freeware which supports a "pdf boxes" command which is supposed to return the list of all the boxes in a given page of a pdf file (mediabox, cropbox, bleedbox, trimbox, artbox.) If you are interested, tell me, I'll find the URL for you.
