Classic AppleScript Extension and other woes

  • Subject: Classic AppleScript Extension and other woes

While not specifically about writing code, I am working on week one of OS X
(10.3.9), and I wanted to finally try getting some work done (by using all
of my apps, which are in Classic.)

These seem a bit like newbie questions, but I have read until my eyes are
bleary, and since I can not get Classic to stay launched...

Do I need to remove or keep the AS extension and related for OS 9? Should I
be dumping nearly all of my OS 9 extensions anyway?

So far, all I get is Classic starting up and then immediately quitting. I
normally used OS 9.1 because 9.2 was wonky OMM and was primarily for
X-Classic, as I understood. But, I've installed a fresh copy of 9.2.2 onto
an external HD and chosen that System Folder instead of my 9.1 in the
Classic Preferences and I get the same result. (What is 'Use OS 9
preferences from home' anyway?)

I can no longer boot directly into OS9 at all, which is no good for me yet.

(I found a list of OSX startup shortcuts, that don't work: hold 'Option' to
invoke Startup Manager to choose an external was a suggestion, but that
flopped, as X just booted anyway. Maybe if I copy the whole OS 9 volume
onto my X volume...but I'm afraid I'll screw something up...)

I've been reading many doc files and I read that AppleScript can communicate
across this OSX/OS9 'membrane'. Does that mean that the AS installed in OS
X is the one being invoked in Classic or is it Classic's? (Doesn't matter,
just curious.)

If anyone can answer (or scold) off-list -- because you all did this a
couple of years ago -- that's fine. ;) Or point me to whatever document I
have missed. Is there a "9 to X Switcher's Guide"?
