Is there a way to prevent the "blink" from occurring when a folder
action kicks in?
What I mean is that when a file is dropped in a watched folder and the
script is run, there is a very short but highly noticeable switch of
UI focus. This means that if you are in the middle of typing something
or selecting something from a menu when the folder action runs, some
of the typing is "consumed" or the menu is deactivated since there is
a brief switch of UI focus.
In Panther I used this script to sort my iChat transcript files into
different fodlers by date and person. Whenever a chat window was
closed, the folder action was invoked. Very neat, and even though the
blinking was a rather disturbing, it was kind of predictable since it
happened right after I closed a chat window.
But now in Tiger iChat windows are apparently saved continously (every
minute or something), so if I have a few active chat windows open, the
blinking makes it more or less impossible to make anything useful with
the computer.
I've tried with a folder action script that does nothing at all and
there's still a switch of focus (blink), so it doesn't seem to be
anything in particular with my script. On the other hand, I'm
surprised that I haven't been able to find any discussion about folder
action focus switch out on the net. Maybe folder actions are more
often used in workflow automation maybe on dedicated machines, and not
so much on personal workstations.
Now in Tiger Launchd apparently offers another way to watch folders
using Watch paths (man launchd.plist for details). I'm thinking of
trying that to see if it works any better.
Any insight on this issue?
