I would hardly call a user's intentionally set preferences "whims".

Sounds like your choice aims to give _you_ precise control over what _you_
want to give the user, despite the user.

You misunderstand.  The format is in the user's control, yes - which is fine if all I'm going to do with it is display it to them.  But if I'm looking for something that I can programmatically manipulate, it needs to be in a form known at the time the code is written.

Also, I never said that it was my choice.  In fact, I specifically advised the OP to use the AS date object if that suited his needs.  I was only, in the course of answering Michelle's question, providing an example of when the output of `date +format` would be preferable to the various strings you can get out of a date object in AppleScript.
