Maybe that's the problem?

On Tiger you just do the following:

do shell script "pmset schedule shutdown " & quoted form of foo with administrator privileges

And:

do shell script "pmset schedule poweron " & quoted form of bar with administrator privileges

Where foo and bar are date/times with the format:  11/22/2005 09:33:33

You can check the schedules by doing "pmset -g sched" in Terminal.
