Finder doesn't offer an AppleScript version of the "Create Archive" command (we have a request for it). Andrew's 'do shell script "ditto..."' approach seems reasonable. Another option is to have your script select "my folder", and then use GUI Scripting to choose the menu item "Create Archive of “my folder”" from the File menu.
