I'm curious why 'zip' or 'gzip' or another compression command is not a
first choice here.

Is this a case of "six of one, half dozen of the other"?
Or are there real reasons for not using one of those archiving commands?

As a total aside, after reading through the 'ditto' man page...

'ditto' seems to violate one of those long-held Unix beliefs that a command
should do one thing...only. Not something I particularly care about, if it
works, but I've read that hardcore *nixers look down on commands like that.
They would rather 'pipe' from command to command.
