I would greatly appreciate some help into this puzzle. Mail 1.3.11 and OS X 1.3.9.

It's a bug associated with HTML message content. (Possibly with *only* HTML content.) Looking at the bug report, I don't see any workaround mentioned, though I suppose that if you were sufficiently ambitious you could try to parse the message source.
