Smile is an AppleScript environment (and a script editor) which complements AppleScript with a number of basic commands, and which is free. Smile's dictionary includes the following commands:


count pages thePDFFile -- returns the count of pages
pdf boxes thePDFFile page i -- returns the boxes of the pdf for page i, as a record
