I know tone is a very ephemeral thing in a text medium, but phrases like "suggesting you actually learn AppleScript instead of thinking it's Just Like English and hoping for the best" are undeniably rude.
Perhaps we should ask those who were directly addressed by the posts in question whether or not they perceived any harshness? Their opinion would seem to be more relevant than either yours or mine.
Well, if someone is interested in my opinion, here it is FWIW.
First of all, the post above from Mr Nebel, was “pseudo-quoting” Matt, so I think that if anyone should be reacting to it, that would be M. The content of Christopher’s post was not at all in the tone of that “pseudo-quote”, in fact it was a very pleasant and enlightening read. Secondly, I’m used to people going on about “reading the book” and to a certain point, I agree that le lilst should not be an alternative for lazy readers. I also agree when Ed says
Then, as today, most appleScripters are dilettantes, who are not terribly interested in learning all the in and outs of scripting or the language or the object model, but simply have a single or a small number of tasks they'd like to quickly and effectively automate. Many AppleScripters start there and then go on to learn scripting and become more proficient, but many do not.
In my case, my job is photography. Since the mid 90’s I have been working more and more in digital and have found in Applescript (about four years ago) a way of optimising my workflow in order to spend more time taking photos and less time organising my meetings, creating archives for Toast at the end of jobs, batch processing resize and color mode conversions. But my main training is photography. I would take these kinds of attacks personally if my training was computer science and I was making my money from AS. I wouldn’t imagine lecturing someone who asked me occasional help about how to make their personal photos better and tell them to go and read the book. By the way, I actually have the book, but have never found time to read it from cover to cover; I tend to pick it up when I do have some time or if I’m trying to find some info when in a jam...
