I am talking about unsecure ftp connections and I should have made it more clear. The original poster was talking about uploads and I assumed ftp because that's the way I do it. Rereading, it's possible that he was actually DOWNloading over HTTP so that he could "use" the files.
My web host does not allow AppleShare and I have never used WebDAV which I assume uses HTTP POST requests. They're not allowed except for replies to forms.
We don't know all that much about the OP's request but I'll add one more pitch for curl.
The -n option allows passwords to be stored in a read-by-owner-only file in $HOME/.netrc. It's not secure enough for paranoids but it does allow a curl command to be embedded as a comment in an HTML or perl file so that it's ready to be selected and executed by a service routine. Edit, save, select, execute, and it's back on line.
