very basic applescript question

Hello,

I am brand spanking new to applescript, but I do have some experience programming some basic OOP in Flash Actionscript 2.0.

My question however may be waay too basic for this list, so perhaps people could point me in a new direction.

I'm trying to very simply automate some tasks using the script editor recorder. I thought it may be a compatibility issue with some updates, so now I have the developer tools all installed, and xcode, running on 10.3.9.

My question is, how limited is the recorder in the script editor? I'm trying to create a script where I open my system preferences and change some settings. If I perform finder actions it records, but in any other native mac application, it doesn't. Is this some kind of preference setting I might be missing? This isn't really what I do for a living, so I'm not looking to build a stand alone application (though I plan on learning slowly in my free time). Is something like this achievable, or is there another resource that could help me out with more basic information?

Again, I've been on this list all of two minutes so I have no clue how hardcore it gets, though I'm sure this question is probably very basic for the list.

Any and all thanks in advance,

Dbit
