I was trying to snoop the metadata yesterday and found some ugliness in nano
(Tiger's replacement for pico).

If you drag your Terminal window wider than 80 characters nano disappears
and it won't come back until you make the window smaller and scroll down.

Annoyingly, your code is still responding to keyboard input even when the
editor is invisible - so you can inadvertently hose your code without
realising :(

Pico never did that, so I've reported it as a bug.
