I don't know about Entourage but in the mail grams I am familiar with the "inbox" is a file and not a folder (directory). The messages contained in a mailbox file are indexed separately from the file system and are like a concatenated text file. The *.mbx format from UNIX is somewhat standardized.

Try opening "InBox" with a text editor. Don't be fooled by its icon.
