As per usual, I'm straying far afield from the original post in this
thread...
Though it's pie in the sky, and only increases a developer's burden a
thousand fold, it seems to me that a lot of the complaints here might be
addressed by the extension of application dictionaries to a hyperlinked
'encyclopedic' format... where each dictionary item was linked to:
1) A moronically simple example of proper syntax for use of the item...
accompanied by the (expected) result.
2) A similarly simple practical use example.
3) An extended example as a professional AS user might implement the item
in a broader context.
4) Known exceptions or bugs in the implementation of the item.

I am neither 'programmer' nor accomplished scripter, and I speak as
someone reluctant to delve deeply into books or guides... but if examples
are available _readily_ to both newbie and experienced user alike without
rummaging through the OS Help system or downloaded script snippets...
At the least, it seems one ought to be able to link directly from a
dictionary item to a 'Notes' page where the individual user might be able
to document what syntax worked and what didn't in a specific case... and
use it for future reference.
As a newcomer to AppleScript, I learned almost solely from example, and I
sense that most new users do likewise. To this day, I care little about
(and can't readily distinguish between) object, class, property,
element... let alone inheritance. I just want my code to work.
For what it's worth - again from the standpoint of neophyte or dilettante
- I genuinely appreciate the 'English like' syntax of AS. I honestly
think it helps promote a logical approach and flow to the task at hand...
even when one is hopelessly ignorant of programming basics.
Further, deponent sayeth not.
