My bug report 4237260 which claimed that "choose remote application" was an
unnecessary security risk and didn't work properly either is being looked at
by Apple.
But, it would appear from the feedback from engineering that the Bonjour tab
of this feature works perfectly for the Apple staffers but fails to work
properly for me (or Matt Neuberg).
I'm not sure what the protocols are when dealing with bugs - are you
supposed to discuss them outside of the Developer site? - but it would seem
that it would be quicker to sort this out among the *users* of this
AppleScript feature.
So, this is a description of the problem:
1. Ensure that you have some Macs on your network that have Remote Apple
Events enabled and then run this script from Tiger:
choose remote application
2. The remote Macs are correctly listed in the Bonjour list, but when you
select them nothing appears in the application list.
3. If you specify the remote Mac by IP address everything works as expected
and the application list is populated with a list of applications running on
the target Mac.
That's the odd thing - it works if you specify an IP but fails if you use
Bonjour.
Selecting a Mac in the Bonjour tab and leaving the script running doesn't
cause an error. The cursor remains an arrow and nothing happens. I can
detect no network activity whatsoever - running netstat shows no TCP
connections. If I specify an IP address I can see that eppc communication
has been established.
I've tested this on G5s, G4s and Powerbooks and have never got the Bonjour
menu to work properly except on a couple occasions where the remote Mac was
running Panther Server.
Is anybody else (apart from Matt) getting the same problem, or is this
something peculiar to two of us on this list?
(Although I'm keen to help isolate the problem, I still feel that the
feature should be changed so that authorisation is required before a list of
running application is returned.)
Regards
