You don't have to be an expert. You have to be able to 'tell application "System Events"' one of the commands
set value of property list item <> of property list file <> to <>
and
set <> to value of property list item <> of property list file <>
It just works. I've been storing data in .plist files for some time now and it seems very reliable.
