Are you trying to move the actual files or the prefs for 'Recent Items'?
Deleting the prefs file would, presumably, just delete the prefs.
If you want to actual items which appear in the Apple menu...
~/Library/Recent Applications/
~/Library/Recent Documents/
~/Library/Recent Folders/
Delete the contents of those three folders (or the folders, they get
recreated) to the trash.
Kaboom.
