Are you trying to move the actual files or the prefs for 'Recent Items'?
Deleting the prefs file would, presumably, just delete the prefs.

If you want to actual items which appear in the Apple menu...

~/Library/Recent Applications/
~/Library/Recent Documents/
~/Library/Recent Folders/

Delete the contents of those three folders (or the folders, they get
recreated) to the trash.

Kaboom.

Are you sure about that ?

My Library doesn't have a Recent Applications folder but there a few Applications listed in the Recent Item menu. I want to get rid of the what the menu displays. BTW I'm using 10.4.6.
