Writers of script in multiple languages may also find that some specialized
text editors for code writing are useful.
I particularly find that Alpha X is a very good choice for living in a happy
medium of multiple programming languages.
Yes, I'm aware that Alpha is not a "script editor" in the same sense as
Script Editor -- meaning a dedicated AppleScript editor and runner. But, I
might also argue that Script Editor is not really a script editor, it's an
AppleScript syntax checker and compiling tool.
For instance, what I mean is that Script Editor is useless for all purposes
except writing AppleScript. While Alpha, as only one example, is, indeed, a
script editor -- you can write, and syntax highlight, and even execute code
-- from a lengthy list of supported languages.
BBEdit is, of course, the web editor's Holy Editor, but I don't often find
myself writing AppleScript in BBEdit. I do use it (or, rather, I mostly use
TextWrangler, since it is very much faster) for PHP, the rare Perl cgi I'm
editing, and for JavaScript.
Alpha X, however, is a great environment for writing all those as well as
the very fun and interesting Tcl, and a dozen or so more languages.
I wouldn't know Ruby if I were wearing her slippers, but I do know that
Script Editor is something that Apple gave me...and which I'd gladly return
if they ask. (I think maybe I used the Script Editor by accident
once...that's the one with the window size designed for Mac Classic, right?)
Check out Alpha (it's free) if you write code in more than one language each
day. It's not the most "Mac-y" of all programs ever created, but it might
be one of the more powerful script editors.
