A very common idiom in English. Google lists this link in which a Spanish speaker is having the same problem with the literal meaning. On the other hand, we anglophones say that we are "getting used to something" - just as opaque. In literal French "I am getting used to it" becomes "J'obtiens ai utilisé à lui" and back this is "I obtained use with him". Some things don't translate.

Gentlemen,

An off-list note because I was perplexed: as a French guy I'd never
heard that _expression_ "drive the point home", and now I see it twice
in one hour in the same thread. Can you confirm that you did not
influence each other with a post off-list or something, and that this
is really one of those odd coincidences which make like a continuous
mystery?

Best to all,
Emmanuel
