I don't think that's it, but at one time there was an inconsistency between
what Finder called Entourage and what Entourage called itself . I recall
this was a problem with the eppc protocol, which only recognized to
"Microsoft Entourage". This seems to have been fixed in Office 2004.

You may find that locating the end of a line is unreliable with many shell
output files, which is why REGEX patterns are so much more powerful. The
problem you are having is typical of database files that have been used a
lot, at least in 10.3 and earlier. They tended to append application
associations onto previous ones. To fix broken files, there were some shell
commands to rebuild that database file but I forget what it was. In any
case, it set all your File Associations to default, which could be real
irritating.

The system used before 10.4 was fraught with glitches. Maybe this is a
remnant of that system. You can see that the 10.4 launch Services database
is more compact and easier to parse. Hopefully it will be more robust too.
Time will tell.
