It changes the slider position here - but not if System Preferences

I wasn't leaving the panel open, Kai, I was closing it before I ran the script and opening it after I did.

Understood, Adam - just making sure we're comparing apples with apples on our respective systems. BTW, I see that, of John's four com.apple.screensaver.XXX plist files, only one actually contains an idleTime key. Is this also the case with your seven files?

... will copy your script again tomorrow and try again (just now, I am going to have a large Macallans with a wee bit of water and go to bed)

Now why didn't I think of that? ;-)

in fact change the idle time? I tried with the defaults command and with the

the screensaver PrefPane was effective.

For me, John, the script changes the slider position/value in the PrefPane (when System Preferences is reopened after running the script). Apparently that's not the case for Adam, so I'm not yet sure what's going on there. (If he has more than one file containing an idleTime key, then there should be a relatively simple fix for that.)

Here, the physical idle time appears to be correct after the screensaver engine has been activated once - which is why the later version of the script (posted 18 Feb 2006, at 03:25) includes a routine to run the engine briefly.

However, it still remains to be seen whether the approach works on other machines...
