You can start with a 10.4.5 PPC bootable volume and put an Intel bootable
volume on top of it. That will give you a volume that will boot both if it
is on a firewire drive. It will boot both to 10.4.5, that is.

But, I think you have to commit to one or the other when you update to
10.4.6. You can't use that method with a 10.4.6 system, and if you use that
to create a system that can boot either ppc or intel to 10.4.5, the update
to 10.4.6 will commit the bootability to whichever system architecture is
used when the update is applied. I suspect that some of the necessary boot
software is no longer universal in 10.4.6. But, if all you need to do is get
an updated 10.4.6 system that boots an intel from a firewire drive, that may
help you.
If all you need to do is create a volume on a firewire that will boot an
intel to 10.4.6, then you can just use the script linked above to clone the
internal 10.4.6 intel drive to the firewire drive. Or you can use the latest
version of NetRestore.
