We tried something like this back in the System 7 days and it was amusing (to some) how promptly it crashed.  I suspect we could get farther these days since it is no longer common practice to blindly dereference a window's refCon.  Considering it was Word doing it back then, we felt this was too dangerous to ship.

Perhaps it's time to revisit this idea.
