I just want to make sure I understand this comment (like Shane). Are you
saying that even on an MacIntel, single file Applications saved from Script
Editor are saved as PPC-only? How peculiar, if so. Why?

PPC-only, but on a MacIntel they are saved as Universal?

"Always" means always. There are no differences in the saved file format, regardless of the machine architecture. We did it that way because we didn't want to expend work updating a format that we don't really want people to use -- single-file applications have a number of subtle problems (mostly having to do with localization) that will never be fixed. (That said, it's sometimes necessary to use them for compatibility reasons.) The saving interface doesn't make this at all clear, but we hope to fix that.
