iCal: How to retrieve a list of events in chronological order?

Okay, I give up. How do I ask iCal "Give me the next three events from
this calendar"?
Everything I try comes back as either an error or "the next two
events, based on the order in which they were added to the calendar."
IE, it gives me:
August 18 - Dental appointment;
March 22 - Foreclose on orphanage;
October 8 - Hats for Ocelots fundraiser
...because those were the last three events I added to the calendar. I
want iCal to return:
March 15 - Anti-Velcro protest rally
March 17 - Society for Mundane Anachronism meeting
March 22 - Foreclose on orphanage
I'm out of ideas and I'm out of Google searches! There _must_ be a way
to do this without walking through the whole list of events myself,
right?
