Paul is correct in that data-fork-only files are preferred, but it has nothing to do with being Unix-y -- it has to do with information surviving across foreign file systems. Mac OS's multi-fork files worked great as long as Macs only talked to other Macs, but that's often not the case now, thanks to things like email, web servers, and non-Mac file servers. The rest of the world is slowly catching on that data might be more than just a name and a stream of bytes, but it's still considered unwise to rely on that.
