There is probably a defaults command for the shell to deselect the
"Open new windows in column view" key in the preference file. You
would need to set it back to original after opening the window.

Yesterday's discussion on "custom icon for application bundle"
prompted an off-list exchange between Paul Berkowitz and myself about
why my disk image would not open in icon view and show a background
picture on his computer. The following is perhaps off-topic, but of
interest to anyone who distributes files via disk image (.dmg) files.
Authors commonly distribute software in disk image files with a
background picture and expect that you see the picture when you mount
the image disk. The picture is commonly a logo and may contain quick-
start instructions. If you have the "Open new windows in column view"
box unchecked (in menu Finder/Preferences/General) you will see the
bg picture in icon view, so there's no problem.
If you have the "Open new windows in column view" box CHECKED, there
may be a problem. Some authors, such as DragThing, know a secret
technique that causes their disk images to always mount in icon view.
Others, such as myself and Bare Bones, don't know the secret. The
TextWrangler disk image opens in column view if your box is checked
and you will not see their logo.
Yesterday afternoon, I examined lots invisible items in disk images
looking for the secret. I didn't find the secret. I searched Apple's
Developer and Support sites and didn't find it.
Does anyone know the secret?
(But I did discover how to add a custom icon to a folder!)
