I've been urged by others to fall back to "do shell script" and
curl, but the argument you make is more compelling than any other

probably going to be the basis of the Mac OS for a long, long time,
I don't suppose anything I write is in danger of being obsolete
because I used "curl."
Ah, pragmatism. Gotta love it. And yes, you're reasonably safe
using "curl". One thing you should be aware of, however, is that curl
(1) uses a completely different cookie "jar" than Safari does, so it
won't know about any cookies you've set there. (Depending on what
you're doing, this might be considered a feature.)
