Has anyone been successful in scripting Photoshop CS2 to open a psd/ psb but as “Composite Data”? I’m working with files that are in the 5gb range and am looking for an automated solution to opening the flattened version of that huge file.

Open them up and flatten them then - or, better still, write a script that rejects layered files outright.

That hack doesn't work consistently outside of PSB - you'll end up with big white images with black text stating: "This layered Photoshop file was not saved with a composite image".

Hose a proof or a print run using undocumented features like that and you'll come badly unstuck.
