I'm wondering if 'pmset', or a similar command, offers a solution to another problem.

I have a G4-PPC with an UPS attached. Sometimes the USB connection between the UPS and the computer becomes inoperative so that automatic shutdown is impossible. When this happens, the Energy Saver icon disappears from the menubar. I have written a stayopen script that detects this (via System Events) and warns me.

Is there a shell script command that will detect if an UPS is connected via USB?
