If yes, then it seems that the server is configured so as to "jail" someuser into its home directory (ie, someuser is "chrooted").
In which case you have no way to access other directories than the user's home directory and enclosed directories; at least with someuser's account.
Could you have a look at the server's configuration?
I'm by no means a networking guru but I don't understand what settings "jail" the user to his home folder. What settings should I check?
There is only one user on the remote computer, he is an administrator and by using the same user name and password I can mount either the remote volume or his home folder via afp. I am not able to test ftp at the moment. For 'computer' I am using the Bonjour name not the IP address.
