I'm by no means a networking guru but I don't understand what settings "jail" the user to his home folder. What settings should I check?

Well, some more info about the server is needed.
Is it just a Mac OS X client, without additional software? Or a Mac OS X Server? Or something else? And which version?

There is only one user on the remote computer, he is an administrator and by using the same user name and password I can mount either the remote volume or his home folder via afp.

That's because the AFP server has its own configuration, and complies with a completely different protocol, with its own idiosyncrasies. ;-)
So, one can't infer the user's capabilities under FTP from his capabilities under AFP.

I am not able to test ftp at the moment. For 'computer' I am using the Bonjour name not the IP address.

That shouldn't be a problem in this case.
