Well, some more info about the server is needed.
Is it just a Mac OS X client, without additional software? Or a Mac OS X
Server? Or something else? And which version?
There is only one user on the remote computer, he is an administrator
and by using the same user name and password I can mount either the
remote volume or his home folder via afp.
That's because the AFP server has its own configuration, and complies
with a completely different protocol, with its own idiosyncrasies. ;-)
So, one can't infer the user's capabilities under FTP from his
capabilities under AFP.
I am not able to test ftp at the moment. For 'computer' I am using the
Bonjour name not the IP address.
That shouldn't be a problem in this case.
